It was Baron A.F.Cronstedt; A Swedish mineralogist that discovered and named Zeolite a natural accruing mineral, that when heated appeared to boil. The Greek words (zein) means “To boil” and (lithos) meaning “stone.” The bubbling Cronstedt saw, was the release of water from the pores of the crystals. Each crystal has thousands of tiny channels that form a cage like structure. If you were to take the channels from a teaspoon of these crystals and spread them out, they would cover the area of an entire football field. It is these cages that make Zeolite a molecular sieve, which is used in many applications, in a variety of industries. Natural zeolite was the first ion exchange water softening media, exchanging the sodium ion for the calcium and other mineral or metal ions.
